Updates are released twice a year, with the possibility of more throughout the year. It is beneficial to always be on the most recent version, as updates contain fixes and enhancements to keep up with newly released display firmware and improve the user's overall experience with SMS. This also allows for technical support to better help you as they will be running the latest version. You must be current in the Software Maintenance Program to update to the current versions.
How it Works:
There are two main ways to update SMS, automatically using the Check for Updates tool or manually installing versions using install files downloaded from the website or a purchased USB. Below, we outline the two options and their respective steps.
Before updating from the previous version, please be sure to do the following:
- Plug devices into the wall – If you’re using a laptop or tablet, make sure that you have it plugged into the wall. This will ensure that your device does not lose power while installing the update or migrating data.
- Check In Projects – If you are an SMS Advanced user, all projects that have been “Checked Out” need to be checked back in. This can be done by going to the File menu and clicking Projects.
- Create a backup of your data – Creating backups ensures that you have a good starting point in the event in that you have issues during migration or if you have other computer issues, such as a bad hard drive, down the road. Backups can be created by going to the Services menu and clicking Backup/Restore Project(s).
- Install next version of software
- Open SMS and allow data to migrate
- Repeat steps 3-5 until firmware is up to date
Check for Updates (Internet Connection Required)
This option can be used for anyone with a current license and on versions newer than v16.1. Updating in this manner will be the most convenient due to not needing to download installers, as well as the correct order will be installed automatically. To perform this process, follow the instructions below:
- Open SMS and across the top toolbar go to ‘Help > Check for Updates’.
- SMS will connect to Ag Leader’s web server and find the next update available
- Users may need to disable antivirus/firewall programs on the computer so the download/installation is not blocked.
- Follow the onscreen instructions to perform the installation.
- Repeat this process until True Update indicates you are on the most recent version
**If installing v15.5 or newer on a Windows Vista operating system, this option will not work. Vista users will need to utilize option 2**
Manually Updating
This process will use a manually downloaded "installer" that contains everything needed to install SMS without requiring a constant web connection. Manual updates will be required in a few different situations, some are listed below.
- If you are on a version older than v16.1, you will need to update manually till you reach that version.
- If you have antivirus/firewall that prevents programs from performing a web install
- If the Check for Updates tool has failed or generated an error
- If you do not have internet access on the computer SMS is installed on
If you require this manual installation, follow the instructions listed below.
Updating your SMS Software, from a previous version, must be done in the correct sequence. You must be current in the Software Maintenance Program to unlock the current release. The list below shows each of the SMS versions and the order to install them. The install sequence is as follows:
7.0x - 7.51 - 8.0x - 8.5x - 9.0x - 9.5x - 10.0x - 10.5x - 11.0x - 11.5x - 11.6x - 12.0x - 12.6x - 13.0x - 14.0x - 14.5x -
15.2x - 15.5x - 16.0x - 16.7x - 17.2x - 17.5x - 18.0x - 18.5x - 19.0x - 19.2x - 19.5x - 20.0x - 20.5x - 21.0x - 21.5x -
22.0x - 22.5x - 23.0x - 23.6x - 24.1x - 24.5x - 25.0x - 25.2x - 25.5x - 26.0x - 26.5x
NOTE: v8.0x can be skipped when from v7.51 to v8.5x
v8.5x can be skipped when upgrading from v8.0x to v9.0x
v10.0x can be skipped when upgrading from v9.5x to v10.5x
v16.0x and 16.7x can be skipped when upgrading from v15.5x to v17.0x
v23.5x must upgrade to v23.6x and migrate before upgrading to v24.1x
v24.0x and v24.1x can migrate to v24.5x
v25.0x and v25.1x can migrate to v25.2x

Before installing, we recommend you restart your computer and disable your anti-virus software. Also, make sure to perform the Before Updating steps listed above.

Check the current version of your SMS Software (Help > About Ag Leader Technology SMS) and circle it in your list above.

Close your SMS software.

Based on the sequence above, select the next SMS Version download out of the versions listed below and allow the download to complete.

Once download is complete, right-click on the zip file and choose Extract

Then, inside the extracted folder, click the SETUP.EXE file. Click Install on the screen that appears.

Follow through the install wizard. After it is complete, you will return to the main screen of the computer. Click the SMS icon to open the software and it should prompt you to migrate your data. You MUST migrate your data before updating to the next version.

After migration of your data is complete, you should be able to create maps and verify that all the data has been migrated correctly. See below for more information on migration.

Repeat steps 2-8 for subsequent versions of the software in the sequence listed.

Migration Process
Once the installation is complete, open the SMS software. You will be prompted to start the migration process. Click ok to start the migration. You will need to do this step to covert the data already contained in the system to the data structure of the new version. You will not be able to access your information on the new version until the data has been migrated.
Migration can take several hours or even just a few minutes depending on your computer, the number of files, and overall amount of data that needs to be migrated.
You will want to make sure the computer stays fully powered throughout the migration process and does not go to sleep.
Once the migration completes the software will restart and all of your information should now be migrated and accessible just like it was on the previous version.
