Exporting out of SMS
There are a number of ways to get information out of SMS. You may need to export a planting prescription out to your planter monitor, send guidance lines to your applicator or export out grain harvest maps to a generic format that can be sent to a trusted advisor.

Field Displays and Monitors

Field display data can be exported out if SMS by going to Tools > Device Setup and either creating a new configuration or using an existing on.

Useful Tips

  • First and foremost, try to use a descriptive name, this will help both yourself and others help distinguish between your various export configurations
  • Do not just click OK after entering in a name; a popup will occur indicating that not all required information is present. In order to create a valid configuration, you will need a valid name and at least one item added over in the various configuration tabs. For example, to export out prescriptions, you need to have a name, fields added over in the Fields Setup tab and the prescription operation added over in the Spatial Data Setup tab.
  • You can use the same configuration multiple times for different display types. For example, if you had an Insight and InCommand and needed to export out the same data to both displays, you would use the same configuration twice, just choosing the different display types when exporting.

Common Issues

  • Duplicate items can cause issues and lead to items not being exported and even error messages. If you notice duplicate items, do not just export them out; reference the Managing Data article for information on how to remove these items properly.
  • Some display types require you to export to a clean card and exporting to a card with existing data can cause issues in your display. Reference your display instructions for additional information.

SMS Mobile

When running compatible versions of SMS Desktop Software and SMS Mobile, users are able to export data out of SMS to these devices. To export data out of SMS to SMS Mobile, navigate to Tools > Device Setup Utility and either create a new configuration or use an existing one.

Useful Tips

  • Users running SMS Mobile for PDA devices (v9.0) will not be able to load data exported out of the latest version of SMS Basic/Advanced.
  • If you prefer to stay with your PDA device, you can export shapefiles from SMS and can import them into your SMS Mobile
  • The same configurations used to export out to a field display can be used to export out data to SMS Mobile
  • When exporting to an existing mobile data location, a new project on the mobile will be created. This project will be named the same as the export configuration.

Common Issues

  • Verify that SMS Mobile is closed before exporting
  • Verify that you are on a compatible SMS/SMS Mobile version

Generic files (shapefiles, text)

Generic files can be exported and used in a wide variety of ways. Other GIS programs, copies of SMS and field displays may all utilize one or another generic format. SMS can export out a number of different formats, shown below.

Useful Tips

  • There are three main ways to export
    • Create map > right-click on map > Select Export
    • Right-click on item in management tree > Select Export
    • Batch Export (Advanced Only)
  • You can choose what gets exported by selecting the specific attributes and properties contained within the spatial file
  • If you wish to export data out in a different format from the default setting, first change your map to reflect the desired look then proceed to export
  • If exporting to KML/KMZ formats, management items such as Field or hybrid names cannot be exported out
    • To work around this, you can add a custom attribute to the data grid of your dataset and export that attribute
  • Batch Export (Advanced Only) can only export one operation at a time, since each operation has different attributes.

Common Issues

  • If you change the map type to an alternative map type and export out, only the mapped attribute will be exported. In order to export out all attributes, save your changes as an operational default.

Transfer Files

Transfer files allow you to export out items like products, reports, analysis functions (Advanced only), print layouts and many more. This file can then be imported into other SMS projects in order to be used there.

Useful Tips

  • When importing a transfer file into a different project/installation of SMS, the version must be the same as the project where the file came from. You cannot take a transfer file from a copy of SMS running v15.5 and import it into v16, the versions must match.

Common Issues

  • Avoid exporting duplicate items, if you have duplicate items here, back out and edit the items in question in order to ensure the correct item is exported out.

Insurance Acreage/Production Export

SMS has the ability to export both acreage and production to various crop insurance companies

Useful Tips

  • Ensure that the correct information is being exported out by first reviewing your imported data. Make sure that everything is complete and correct before exporting.
  • For questions on accessing data or issues on various insurance webpages, refer to your insurance agent for more instruction.

Soil Sampling Export

After creating your soil sampling points in SMS, this tutorial will cover how to export those points out to a generic format to be used in other GIS programs. If you wish to export to the SMS Mobile, please refer to the video above.

Images

SMS allows for the export of virtually any existing dataset out as an image. This image can then be used to create documents, presentations or print outs of the exported data.

Useful Tips

  • After exporting images, the file cannot be used to import data into other copies of SMS or other GIS programs; they are purely visual at that point. If you wish to read this data spatially into another program, please reference the generic files entry above.
