This analysis function allows for the creation of a management zone dataset based on user defined inputs including specific datasets and associated datasets and attributes. Zone based analysis uses clustering to attempt to find natural groupings of the input data and place them into regions that common characteristics. This tool can also allow the user to define productivity ranking for further analysis.
This type of a layer is generally used to assist growers in making decisions on the farm based on areas that produce similarly. So this layer can be used for items such as creating a prescription, or soil test locations, or to determine best ways to scout a field.
Note, this is an Advanced only feature.
To use Zone Based Analysis follow the steps below:
Select Analysis – Analysis Wizard
Select Zone Based Analysis then Add to add a new function
Provide a name for the function and a description if needed and click Next
Next, add any datasets that are to be ran in this analysis. Click Add Dataset and use the data filters to select the desired dataset. Repeat these steps as many times as needed to add additional datasets.
(Steps 6-8 cover zone productivity rankings, if not utilizing this feature, jump to step 9) In this screen a dataset can be added to provide a zone productivity ratings. This process uses an existing dataset, like multi-year averages, will allow you to rank the generated zoned based on the data from the added layer. This can then be used across your project for common management. To add this dataset, check the box next to Zone Productivity Rating
Next select the desired layer
Finally, select the attribute you wish to use and enter in the ranges for the various ranks. You can assign the same rank to multiple ranges if needed.
Once dataset(s) are added for the main analysis and potentially for ranking, click Next
Select the desired attributes you want to us to perform the main grouping, two or more will need to be selected. If multiple layers are added, take care to select the correct layer and respective attribute. Once complete, click Next.
This next window allows for the customization of method used to generate the zones.
Fixed – SMS will generate the entered number of zones
Optimized – SMS will calculate using the min/max numbers as well as the refinement to determine the best fit for the data provided.
A minimum area can also be applied and will help to “clean” the map up and reduce the amount of very small areas. A set value can be applied, or the auto option will perform this step automatically based on field size:
0-300 acres - .5 acre minimum
300-800 acres - 1 acre minimum
800+ acres - 1.5 acre minimum
After clicking Finish (and next on reference dataset options), the created function will now be present in the list of available functions.
This function can now be ran and the final product should appear similar to what is shown. Note, with any analysis function, this can be ran for any layers in your management tree or over a number of fields if needed. The resulting output will be saved under the new Management Zones operation and can be fully edited in the Management Zone editor.
